Find out a place and work your way up
Find a right place is the first priority. Do you want to make a huge vegetable garden or a smaller one? Decide it before you start. Starting from the smallest, that’s the first tips for any beginners. A place of 4ft by 4ft is the ideal choice to start. You can also plant some tomatoes on basins of the backyard.
Decide among a raised bed and planting in the ground
For a beginner, planting in the ground means a lot of work. You have to tear out the grass from a huge part of the yard! It’s not so impossible but means a lot of effort! So, be ready, if you choose this path.
On the other hand, raising beds almost looks very neat and easier than planting in the ground. For Raising bed, you may follow square foot gardening. It’s based on the small gardener who has small, city backyard.
Choose a place that has up to 6 hours of sunlight a day
Sunlight is an extremely important factor for plants. If you are planning to make a vegetable garden, you should be certain about this factor too. Choose an area where sunlight is available at least for 6 hours. The shady zone isn’t good for plants.
Choose a location where pipeline or sprinkler can reach as you have to water your plants often. The vegetable garden needs one inch of water per week and it’s depending on how much sunshine they got.
Have to wait until the risk of frost is gone
Do you know that vegetables don’t like frost? Make the garden when frost leaves. It’s better to ask local garden center. They will give you all information about the specific time. You can also search online for specific information.
Choose a vegetable that you’re actually going to eat
Do you like a radish? If not, then why on earth you will plant it? Just think, what actually you and your family love to eat. Plant only those items. Don’t plant unfamiliar things that you don’t like or no idea what to do. If you want to do business you can analyze the market before planting.
Choose vegetables that will actually grow
I realize that cherry tomatoes will be a safe bet for beginners who might neglect their garden. Even you may plant onions, carrots and parsley too. Those kinds of stuff grow up easily. However, it will be more precious if you talk to local garden center. They can give you much info about what is the best that will thrive in your area with a minimum amount of attention.
Prepare your soil
Soil preparing is depending on which method (raised boxes or in the ground) you’re following. If you’re planting in the ground, have to make sure soil have enough nutrients. If not, formerly add few bags of compost to the soil. For raised boxes, you can use a mixture of compost, topsoil and peat moss. As a beginner, it’s enough for preparing the soil.
Get the right tools
As a beginner, you really don’t need lots of tools. Just make sure, you have a shovel, a garden trowel, a watering can and gardening gloves. That’s enough to start. This stuff will help you to do your job easily. You can develop your collection of gardening tools as time goes on.
Ask for help
As a newbie in gardening, you have to gather a lot of knowledge. If you know any professional ask for some tips or help where required. You can also search on Google about your problem. And if you have a gardener friend, call him often to check out your progress.
