Which one to Use Organic or Synthetic Fertilizers?
Let me start with the definition of the Organic Fertilizers and the Synthetic Fertilizers:
Organically Derived Fertilizer
Fertilizers that are derived from vegetables, manure or animal matter or bi-products are known as organic fertilizer. Usually, organic fertilizers contain nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous in little amount compared to synthetic fertilizers. But natural fertilizers contain micro-nutrients more than synthetics do.
Advantages of Organic Fertilizer
Organic Fertilizers improve the structure of the soil while increases its ability to hold water and other nutrients. They help to make soil and plants strong and healthy over time. Also, with this type of fertilizer, the chance of over fertilize your land is equal to zero. The chance of toxic buildups of chemicals and salts are also zero. Organic or Natural Fertilizers are, and one can make by their own.
Disadvantages of Organic Fertilizer
The Organic or Natural Fertilizers works slowly, and also the nutrients ratios cannot be guaranteed. You have to provide more labor to apply this type of fertilizers. Besides, those needs warmth and proper moisture to work. If you make organic fertilizer on your own, they are not very expensive, but if you want to purchase a package from the market, you have to pay more! Yeah, they are costly.
Synthetically Derived Fertilizer
Fertilizers that are made in factories with specific nutrients are known as synthetic fertilizer. Those work quickly and more predictably than natural ones. They contain fewer micro-nutrients compare to organic fertilizers.
Advantages of Synthetic Fertilizer
If you use synthetic fertilizer you will notice the improvement within a few days. As they contain a certain amount of nutrients and provide them to the plants immediately, so they are quicker than natural fertilizers. As they are made in the factories after proper research and testing, so they offer specific nutrients ration as desired. Applying those types of fertilizes doesn’t require much labor, and they are inexpensive as well.
Disadvantages of Syntheti Fertilizer
Though they offer a quick and easy solution, yet this type of fertilizers has some problems too. They help the plant to grow but doesn’t provide any good for the soil. They do not promote life or soil health. Synthetic fertilizer can even reduce nutrients from the soil. Besides, those are made from chemically-processed products that can harm humans and other living beings around.
Organic vs Synthetic fertilizers
Both types have their pros and cons. Now the question arises, which one is better? Or which one should I perform to my plants? I will not answer the question directly instead lead you to the right path so that you can find the answer yourself.
Organic fertilizers are made from natural ingredients like plant and animal waste products and minerals. The main components are manure, bone meal, corn meal or compost.
Synthetic fertilizers are the result of chemical processing on the factories. Those are made from petrochemical products, rocks, and some organic materials. Synthetic Fertilizers are highly processed to provide consistency.
Organic Fertilizers offers lower ratios of nutrients as they are not processed. So, one cannot guarantee you the exact quantity and ration of nutrients on organic fertilizers. If you need to correct the soils pH balances quickly, sorry to say they are not an ideal option.
With synthetic fertilizers, a specific ratio of potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen is guaranteed. Different fertilizer products in the market offer different ratios of nutrients. In the packaging, you can notice the specific composition of the product. If you need to know how much fertilizer needs to add on your soil, you can conduct a pH test using a kit from any hardware store. The ideal soil pH should stay in between 6.0 to 7.0.
Which one is to use?
Finally, it’s time to declare which one is necessary for you. Both Organic and Synthetic Fertilizers are essential and need to apply to the plants depending on the requirement.
Organic Fertilizers are best to use in the areas where children and pets play and also where food is grown. If you use organic fertilizer in the fruit and vegetable garden, it can improve the quality and taste of the food.
Synthetic Fertilizers should be used in low traffic areas and places where a faster result is needed. In the place where there is limited water runoff, synthetic fertilizers are the best solution.
As you can understand, both organic and synthetic fertilizers are worth according to the situation. A true gardener uses both the types depending on the need. In the end, nutrients are nutrients. Still, if you want to live in harmony with nature, and want lasting improvement, organic fertilizers are the best choices.
